MHS provided outreach, shelter, case management, psychiatric, or supportive services for 3,913 homeless persons -- including 160 homeless children -- during the 2008 fiscal year.

Our mission is to help people gain control of their lives by forging solutions that resolve mental health crises and end homelessness.

Mental Health Services for Homeless Persons, Inc. (MHS) is a leading provider of mental health and supportive services for vulnerable populations of the city of Cleveland, and Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA. Now in our 22nd year, we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing services at 14 sites with a staff of 230 and the efficient use of more than $16 million in revenues. Last year, 3,913 homeless adults and children participated in our homeless assistance services, and 11,712 children and adults took part in our crisis and trauma intervention services. MHS is certified by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services. MHS is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, and The American Association of Suicidology. Outcome data demonstrate that MHS programs help clients achieve housing, recovery, and self-determination.

Homeless Assistance

Homeless adults with disabling mental or physical conditions achieve housing, mental health recovery, and self-determination through their participation in outreach, shelter, psychiatric, and supportive services. Seventeen programs provide homeless persons who have disabilities with the most comprehensive scope of care of any agency in Ohio, promoting sustained recovery, independence, and community participation.

Crisis & Trauma Intervention

Children and adults whose safety and health are threatened by mental illness or overwhelming stressors call our 24/7 Suicide Hotline. Our Mobile Crisis Team helps them achieve safe resolution of their crisis situations. MHS has provided 24/7 crisis assessment and intervention services throughout Cuyahoga County, Ohio, without interruption, since 1995. These services formed the basis for the nation's first scientific demonstration of the effectiveness of mobile crisis outreach. For help, call 216-623-6888. TTY/TDD: 216-623-6540

Police officers at the scene of domestic violence incidents refer traumatized children and families to our Children Who Witness Violence program. At-risk children and families are referred by the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services to our Child and Family Focused Services program.

Susan Neth is the Executive Director of MHS.

Susan Neth became the Executive Director in December 2008. She joined MHS in 1988 as a case manager, and has served in an extraordinary range of leadership roles. With a Master's degree in Organizational Development, she has led the agency's achievement of many critical initiatives.

MHS was founded in 1988 to serve severely mentally-disabled, homeless adults. While retaining our original name, we now provide diverse interventions addressing critical community needs, as a contract agency of the Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board, the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board of Cuyahoga County, and a partner agency of United Way of Greater Cleveland.

MHS uses evidence-based treatment protocols to help its clients achieve important outcomes.

Through their participation in MHS services, more than 1,700 homeless persons have achieved stable housing, recovery, and self-determination during the past five years.
