On December 19, 2002, Roy A. Bernardi, HUD Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development, and Senator George Voinovich came to MHS to announce that HUD will provide more than $55.6 million for housing and supportive services to homeless individuals and families in Ohio. Cleveland and Cuyahoga County will receive $14.4 million of those funds. The homeless assistance and emergency shelter programs of MHS operate with funding from HUD, the Ohio Department of Mental Health, individual and corporate donors, and foundations. In the photograph at top, right, HUD Assistant Secretary Bernardi presents a check for MHS homeless assistance programs to Taqwaa Azur, Outreach Coordinator, and Steven M. Friedman, Ph.D., MHS Executive Director.
