Asklepios, taught by Cheiron.  One of four murals at the Allen Memorial Library, on the campus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Asklepios (or Asclepius) was born of the world's first caesarean section, performed by Apollo. The child was given to the Centaur Cheiron (or Chiron), who raised Asklepios and taught him the art of surgery. Asklepios' formidable talents in surgery and healing enraged Zeus, who killed him with a thunderbolt. Zeus later atoned for his act by placing Asklepios in the sky as the constellation Ophiuchus, meaning serpent-bearer, a reference to the rod, a symbol of authority, entwined by a serpent, a symbol of fertility or life. The serpent-bearer has since been adopted as the symbol of physicians.
